Direct TV Vs Dish Network, Which is Better?

When satellite TV began taking off, Direct TV was the undisputed leader on the market. It did not take long before competitors began to appear. The most successful of these competitors is Dish Network. Together with DirecTV, it is now one of the leading providers of satellite TV in the United States. They both offer very similar services but there are some small differences between the two. DirecTV still seems to be slightly more popular, but both companies have been recognized for the great services they provide.

One of the biggest differences between DirecTV and DishNetwork is the fact that it offers fewer channels than its competitor: 255 compared to 500 for Dish Network. In some US cities you really do not have a choice between satellite TV providers. In Oklahoma City, for example, you can only sign up for Dish Network, while people who live in Las Vegas can only get DirecTV. DirecTV also owns the exclusive rights to NFL and MLB programming and offers more sports packages than Dish Network, so if you like sports this company may be a better choice for you.

In the end both companies offer excellent services. Both now offer free installation and equipment (for first time customers). No matter which provider you end up choosing, you will enjoy all the benefits in image and sound quality that satellite TV offers. Sports fans should go with DirecTV though, as their sports packages are far superior to the ones offered by DishNetwork. Other than that both services are pretty similar.

What is Network Security? Simplified Definition

First of all, what is a network?

The network we refer to here is the computer network, which has so many definitions from too many sources whether on the internet or elsewhere. Simply put, a network is the inter-connection of cables and other communications media, connectivity equipment such as switches and routers, electronic devices such as computers, printers, scanners, plotters, etc., for the purpose of sharing data and resources.

Whoa! Now, that doesn't sound simple at all, does it? Alright, let's give it a second try...

What is Network Security? Simplified Definition

A Network is the inter-connection of communications media, connectivity equipment, and electronic devices for the purpose of sharing data and resources.

Now, that wasn't too hard, was it? And here's the second question...

What is Security?

This one is easy, as the word security means safety or safekeeping, protection or well-being.

So simply put, Network Security refers to any undertaking designed to protect the network.

Why do we have to protect or "Secure" the network?

We need to protect the network because there are constant threats against the "resources" we share in the network. These could be valuable information or data about our employees and clients, or more importantly about our products or businesses. Most of these threats come in the form of:

* Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses
* Spyware and adware
* Zero-day attacks, also called zero-hour attacks
* Hacker attacks
* Denial of service attacks
* Data interception and theft
* Identity theft

In order for us to fully understand what "Network Security Solution" is all about, we must also understand how Network Security works. Because there are a variety of threats, there is no single solution. We need multiple layers of security, so that if one fails, the attacker would have to deal with the next layer.

Network Security Systems are usually composed of many components of both software and hardware which are designed to work together to improve security and minimize maintenance. The software must be relentlessly updated to prevent from new threats.

These components include:
* Anti-virus and anti-spyware
* Firewall, to block unauthorized access to your network
* Intrusion prevention systems (IPS), to detect and block attacks
* Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), to provide secure remote access

Network Marketing - The Best Product to Sell

A lot has been written on the subject of network marketing and the products commonly sold through network marketing. Unfortunately, most people joining a network marketing program for the first time don't read the books first. Even if they did, they would get a message that is really hard to grasp for someone used to the standard sales techniques of the modern world.

If you are new to network marketing, a great book to read is "Masters Of Networking" by Ivan R. Misner, Ph.D., and Don Morgan, M.A. While it does contain instructions on how and where to network, I believe that part of its value lies in what it doesn't always say out loud, but hints at in the subtitle: Building Relationships For Your Pocketbook And Soul.

So what does that have to do with selecting the product that you will attempt to "sell" through network marketing?

Network Marketing - The Best Product to Sell

The book I just mentioned gets a lot of its message across through the stories of people who have passed through the stages of learning to network. In keeping with that, I am going to talk about my favorite subject...myself.

In 1996 I was introduced to my first network marketing venture. Never mind what it was, but I will say that it was a valuable product and I felt good being associated with it. I honestly felt that it was a service that many people could use and that by purchasing this service they could get better service in certain health related areas and they could possibly save large sums of money.

In other words, I BELIEVED!

I also believed that I could make a lot of money. After all, I saw other people doing it, and being a product of 20th century marketing practices, I began doing what I thought I was supposed to be doing. I placed ads, I handed out flyers, left business cards laying around, and mailed out a lot of brochures. After a few months, I was making some money, but it sure seemed a hard way to make a living!

In the meantime, people I knew were making larger and larger sums from the same product, and with a fraction of the time, effort, and money. So I did the next logical thing...I dropped out and spent a couple of years licking my wounds, nursing a grudge, and generally being a chump. The one thing I didn't do was ask for help or study the subject of network marketing. However, I DID keep signing up for program after program, with the same predictable results.

Finally, I broke down and did the unthinkable...I did some research!

What did I learn? I learned that some of the best "sales" people and some of the best network marketers had the same thing to say. Their opinion was to quit concentrating on sales and concentrate on building a network of people who respected you. They did not necessarily mean "respected" in the sense of someone who was an expert or who stood head and shoulders above the rest. What they meant was that you should be someone who is willing to listen, to help, to guide, to support...to be a genuine friend and someone who could be counted on.

I started thinking about the people I had known who were successful. Not a one was a "sales" person. They were housewives, retirees, ex-teachers, bus drivers, fast food workers, garbage collectors...but most had three things in common. They believed in the product and the company, they knew the important points of the product and the opportunity, and they were genuinely interested in and involved with those they sold to or recruited.

As it happened, at about the time I was doing this research, I actually had a JOB teaching newcomers to an industry how to become successful in that field. It felt great. I got to take people and help bring them to a point where they were going to be in a position to have a new career and make lots of money. I didn't have to "sell" them anything. I provided solid information, guidance, advice based on experience, and sometimes a shoulder to cry on. I noticed one interesting thing. They hung on my every word. If I said a certain item was important to have, within 48 hours at least half of my students would have that item if they didn't have it already.

By the way, one common benefit of the job I am speaking of and a network marketer is the gratitude of the people that have come into the business and been successful thanks at least in part to the interest and support you have shown them.

I saw this happen again and again, and not just with me, but with others who were providing this instruction as well.

Okay, I'm slow, but not fatally so. I realized that if I could place myself in a similar position in a network marketing endeavor, I might have similar results.

I then began to apply my newfound knowledge to network marketing, and, after a couple of false starts and the occasional retraining session, I found out that the technique works!

Start with a good strong product from a reliable company. Make sure you understand what the heck you are talking about, arm yourself with order pads and pencils, and then get out there and start being NICE! I know it's going to be difficult, but you will have to buckle down and be a benefit to society and let people like you.

I guess you've figured out that in the network marketing world, YOU are the best product to sell.

Direct Sales - Network Marketing Meeting Planning Template

Do you struggle when planning your monthly team meetings? Are your sales organization training meetings poorly attended? Is meeting time stressful?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then this direct sales/network marketing direct sales meeting planning template will change your life. There is a simple formula for putting together interesting, fun, keep-'em-coming-back team trainings.

Network Marketing-Direct Sales-Party Plan trainings

Direct Sales - Network Marketing Meeting Planning Template

It does not matter whether you are a party plan, network marketing, or direct sales company, this template for planning meetings will work for you. Most companies have three services which vary from company to company. In any of those business models they are:

Bookings, prospecting, finding business Sharing the opportunity, recruiting Showings or presentations and/or product knowledge After you figure out what your three main meeting topics are, then you can apply them to this three-part template. For the purpose of this article we will talk about a home party plan company. If you are a network marketing company or a direct sales company that does not rely on the party plan for leads do not judge yourself out. This still applies to you. Just divide the meeting up into your appropriate skills as they relate to your business.

Every training meeting has the same 5 parts. In our example, the meeting will be divided into its 5 segments.
Networking time Part 1 Presentations: discuss presentation skills, sales skills, product knowledge Part 2 Opportunity: work on recruiting skills, interview questions, recognizing red flags, etc. Part 3 Bookings: dedicated discussion of finding business, leads or bookings and becoming better at it. Wrap-up
Plan Your Training Meeting
Plug one of your three meeting parts into the template each month. Then further define your training meeting by selecting one of the following presenters to apply to each segment.
An outside speaker A newbie A seasoned rep A consultant who is not that good but did something well Another leader in your organization You A video Home office representative
Now pick a format for each section of the training:
roundtable divide into groups lecture networking game theme combination of two of the aboveBy applying different presenter, different formats, and different material on the same topics that focus on the key skills necessary to be successful in your direct selling business, you will train everyone on what they need and not alienate the seasoned reps with boredom.

The beginning of the training is always networking. The end is a thank you and wrap-up and more networking. Delegate parts of these sections out at each training for the next training meeting. Utilize the skills of your organization to assist with the training meetings. If you have a very social person, then they should be the greeter. If there is an awesome recruiter, then that person may be the one in charge of taking the visitors and new consultants under her or his wing so that they do not feel left out. A sign up sheet for duties is always helpful. Have a routine of passing it around for sign up for the next training. Examples of what should be on it are: clean up, set up, paper products, snacks, beverages, carry stuff to car, and the like.

The networking portion at the beginning is very important. Incorporate networking games or activities into the arrival time so that everyone is forced to chat. Do not have chairs set out during set up. Force the mingling. (Everyone can grab a chair when it is time to sit down.)

Direct Sales Team Meeting Games

There are many networking games that are fun and encourage developing relationships. On colorful note cards jot down something about each person that you know that everyone else may not. As the consultants arrive, they pick a card and try to find their match. The cards may say things like:

Going to nursing school Husband installs carpet Has triplets Etc. "Another direct sales training game that is good for networking is what I call the peanut butter and jelly game. On colorful note cards write matching or complimentary items and people have to find the compliment that goes with their card. For example:

Peanut butter and Jelly Turkey and Stuffing Ham and Eggs
Keep The Comng To Meetings

These types of games are fun and will help people develop friendships. When you have friends at the training meeting, you keep coming back.

Six Sales Meeting Tips
Do not be the presenter every time and do not "add on" when the other presenters are done. The networking segment is very important. Put time into making it different each training meeting. Use themes to generate interest. Keep them guessing by using the different formats and presenters. Delegate and be specific. Tell your presenter exactly what point you want covered, but not what format or how to say it. Chat with the presenters before the training meeting about their topic and what they are going to do.

MLM Training - Effective Invitation Techniques For MLM or Network Marketing

So I was really excited about my new MLM opportunity and I did not listen to my upline's advice.

I picked up my phone and called one of my best friends!

"Hey man, I have something really important to talk to you about, I can't explain it over the phone, so I am coming over to your place tonight!"

MLM Training - Effective Invitation Techniques For MLM or Network Marketing

He said OK and I slammed down the phone! I thought to myself "Phew, that wasn't so hard!"

Today, thinking back to what I did back then! "Boy, how stupid I was!"

Because I did no qualifying at all, I just went to my best friend's home, blasted away like a machine gun while he listened to me blasting away.

And after I finally finished blasting away my presentation, flipping my flip chart, demonstrating how my skincare products, yada yada yada!

Man! I think back about it today, I can't believe I actually applied some exfoliant scrub on my best friend's hands! He must have been totally grossed out!

But I actually believed that he would either buy my products or join my business! That obviously did not happen. He just gave me the courtesy of listening to my presentation and at the end of it all, he said "It looks good. You try it first. I'll think about it." But he never bought anything from me, let alone join my business.

So people, you really really must not repeat my mistakes.

Invitation is simple, but you must have the right timing and know what to say! It takes a bit of practice at first, but everyone will be able to get it easily.

Now, let's go back to the step by step process which is to first!

1. Do your names list.

With the advent of the Internet, websites, email and video DVD technology! we no longer have to call our contacts, get them out for a face to face 2 hour presentation and pray that they join our business!

2. Qualify them and sort out the 5 stars from the zero stars, the MLM Leaders from the Time Wasters.

3. Find out their needs using the F.O.R.M technique.

4. Start inviting them according to their needs! I am going to focus on step 4 now.

Technology has automated our "Qualification" process.

Instead of inviting our contacts for a meetup to present the business opportunity, all we have to do is pick up the phone, call their number and say this!

FOR POTENTIAL BUSINESS BUILDERS and MLM Leader type prospects:

YOU: "Hi Dennis, do you have a minute?"

DENNIS: "Yeh sure, what's up?"

YOU: "I have some good news. I just started a new business and I am looking for some business partners. I thought you might be interested in looking at this." DENNIS: "Ok, what's it about?"

YOU: "Ok, tell you what, the business proposal is explained on my website. Are you able to check it later today?"

DENNIS: "Yes sure."

YOU: "You got a pen and paper? Write it down."

DENNIS: "Ok. Go ahead."

YOU: "It's (yourwebsite.com)"

DENNIS: "Ok. Got it."

YOU: "Great, check it out later today and I'll call you back tomorrow. Everything is explained clearly there. Now, time is of the essence, so promise me you will check it today alright?"

DENNIS: "Will do man. I'll check it right now. Talk to you after i see it."

Now, did that sound so hard? Can you pick up the phone, call someone and ask them to check out a website? Of course you can. It's SO EASY.

Now if it's someone you bump into on the street or at an event, just hand out your namecard and do this!

"Here's my namecard and that's my website address, I am looking for business partners, so if you are keen to explore a new business opportunity, check out my website today and give me a call."

Or if you happen to have a DVD video CD with you on hand and you know that this is a 3 to 5 star prospect on your list, just pass them the DVD and say!

"Now this DVD contains my business proposal on video. Watch it today and let me know what you think. Now, I only have 5 copies so I will need this back from you after you have watched it today. I'll be calling you to pick it up from you tomorrow."

Some companies also have a magazine that is designed to explain the business opportunity to the prospects that you lend them to. You can also use that as a invitational tool.

So I hope you get my point here!

Today, we no longer invite people for a BUSINESS PRESENTATION face to face, in a hotel or at the office anymore. It's too HIGH PRESSURE!

Instead, we invite people to:

1. Visit a websiteNow, that's called LOW PRESSURE, HIGH LEVERAGE!

2. Watch a DVD Movie

3. Read a Magazine

Anyone can do it, and you can easily do that to anyone you meet.

Be it someone you met face to face at an event, or someone you chatted up online.

While you are sleeping, your prospect might be researching your website, watching your DVD business presentation or reading about your opportunity, products, company background on your magazine.

In this day and age, if your company does not have all these powerful invitational tools to make your invitation and presentation process totally 100% SIMPLIFIED, AUTOMATED and DUPLICATED!

Either you can continue doing it the OLD SCHOOL way which is! "I have to meet up with you and explain everything!", then you go through a 1-2 hour flipchart presentation or laptop PowerPoint presentation and after that, it's a 50/50 chance.

It's either a YES or a NO. But you have already invested 2 hours and that time could have been spent calling another qualified prospect, giving out a namecard, DVD or magazine.

"Direct Salespeople Sell, Network Marketers SORT!"

What the NEW SCHOOL MLM Leaders do is to sort through their ever-growing list of qualified prospects by leveraging simple, automated, duplicable tools that do all the presenting and convincing for them.

Today, I will never meet up with anyone who has not gone through my qualification process. Until that suspect has seen my website, watched my DVD or read my magazine and they convinced themselves that they are really really interested in joining my business! I will not agree to meet up. Because I can be inviting more people into my qualification funnel.

Think about it like a funnel, that channels all the people I invite to go through that funnel, where they get qualified step by step and when they come out at the other end, they will be calling me. And all I have to do is answer their questions and clear up their doubts.

Then finally I just need to pop the BIG question, "So are you an A-Big Business Builder, B-Small Business Builder or C-Product User?"

So if you're someone who is still stuck in the OLD SCHOOL days! and you feel that you will be happier if you can build your business using the NEW SCHOOL ways that I am talking about above, either you wait for your company to embrace technology and create these systems and tools or! you create those tools yourself!

Else you might want to consider looking for a company that does provide these systems.

As I mentioned earlier, inviting is so simple, that anyone can do it. And now, with the low pressure methods above!

I am sure anyone in MLM or Network Marketing will be able to invite a prospect to understand more about their business.

What Do You Consider When Evaluating Hardware For Your Network Infrastructure (eg Routers, etc)

When you are placed in the unenviable position of having to make decisions on selecting a hardware solution for your company's network infrastructure .... LAN or WAN .... the evaluation process can be overwhelming. Without a plan you're doomed to failure .... and a huge migraine.

Keep in mind that it's important to consider the culture of your enterprise and what qualities it values.

For instance, if it values self-reliance in IT - or views it as core to its business - it may be more likely to look for the best of breed solution. If IT is less central to the enterprise, than a widely implemented adequate solution that is easy to find experienced people to work on may be the solution of choice.

What Do You Consider When Evaluating Hardware For Your Network Infrastructure (eg Routers, etc)

In short, making the list of qualities we all want in a piece of gear/vendor is easy. Figuring out which ones to emphasize in the analysis is the real challenge and the analysis that really should drive your decision.

To help things go smoother ..... focus on these simple attributes in your evaluation.

The number one answer is the integrity of the corporation. What is very important is that the company has a commitment to make their products work as advertised and documented, and not cut corners on Quality Assurance.

Another important factor, but related ,is their customer service and technical support. What is the turn around time to get replacement components that are defective. When you talk to technical support, are they knowledgeable or certified on the product they support and the platforms the product runs on.

Base your provider evaluation on the above and the rest will follow along.

Next .... confirm the design requirements, how much network traffic, kind of traffic (data, VoIP, etc.), number of remote networks for WAN, future growth, redundancy. Cisco has an online tool that will suggest the appropriate device based on answers to these kinds of questions.

If cost if no object you'll do well with Cisco. It may be worth evaluating Juniper and Foundry depending on your needs, and for SMB solutions you may even consider open-source options such as the Vyatta router/firewall.

Over the years I've seen people tackle this question, all in a variety of ways. What I have seen more often than not is the desire to create more documentation / analysis of products / due-diligence without focusing on what's at stake.

Don't complicate the question too much - focus on your specific needs, and make sure you don't exclude the future. What you need now may be just the ice-breaker for what your needs are in the future - make sure you have a plan to scale.

The other big question I think is also overlooked is residual costs associated with purchased equipment. A lot of companies are gung ho on maintenance purchased annually .... remember, there is a cost associated with downtime, and in some environments this cost prohibitive; in some it is a non-impact. Factor these things in your evaluation as well as the cost to support the solution.

For a quick checklist:

* First of all evaluate known and proven brands when possible since the issue of continued support from the company and availability of warranty repair and replacement would be a major concern on a significant investment.

* Second - Choose the correct level of product for the job. Avoid paying for added functionality if the client would never, ever (be careful, things can change) use these things. Don't buy a limo when you only need a bicycle.

* Third - Compare performance, price, and mean time between failures (MTBF). Look for "end of life" announcements. If you are looking for a bargain or want longevity these are a good clue.

* Fourth - Google the product(s) in question to find reviews and other feedback.

* Fifth - Hands-on evaluation with a call to support for the finalist products.

Somewhere in here you may need to consider the need for failover or redundancy. If this unit represents a single point of failure without backup .... then cross ship warranty policies or local availability may be critical.

Generally ..... it all starts with knowing your needs. Routers have the ability to connect networks with different media, even different networking techniques. Examples are Fiber-to-UTP and Ethernet-to-ADSL. It's obvious you should have a device that can address your needs. Will your needs change in the future and, if so, is the device capable of adapting to those changes?

Other considerations are security ..... does the device stand at the edge of your network, at the risk of being attacked; or is it somewhere in the middle of your LAN, just connecting departments to the core. In the first case you need something with a firewall feature set, in the second case a layer 3 switch might do.

Don't forget ..... what is the amount of traffic the router needs to process.

Once you know what you need, and bring back your white list to the devices that address your needs, more choices have to be made.

When it comes to IT in general, money is a BIG issue. As IT usually will be seen as something that costs money. So at first thoughts, the price of the equipment is important.

BUT...

You should consider that also for managing the network environment. When your initial expenses are low but you spend a great deal of time keeping it up and running, it is difficult to adapt to changes, or your company suffers network outages ..... your management will not be pleased. So you need to look at MTBF figures, mean time between failure, and how fast you can get a replacement. With some exotic brands replacement can be an issue.

For real important routers you should consider a hot standby configuration which costs more, but will switch over automatically in case of a failure without anyone knowing your primary router died. Except for you, of course, as you are monitoring both devices.

Another important item related to managing the equipment is how it fits in your IT department. If your network engineering department is a group of well-trained Juniper specialists, buying a Cisco brings additional costs for training.

Boiling it all down here's the real message:

Firstly as with all business considerations you must consider the costs there is no point at looking at the top of the market if the business will not stretch to that point. It is also worth discounting cheaper options ASAP if the business is prepared to pay for the right solution rather than the cheapest.

The next consideration depends on the nature of your business, your need for security and reliability. But at a general level most businesses need something reliable. This means if you are remote or have remote offices with little support you want something with a high time between failures. Security often depends on the nature of your business protection. Financial and Medical information is for example considered more of a risk than most general data. There is also always a basic need for security .... but again as always there must be a balance of Cost, Usability and Security. It must never be your only consideration. It also depends on the size of your IT support organisation. Will hundreds of people require access to this equipment .... or will this be restricted to a select few? Is centralizing and auditing access worth it for your organisation?

Supportability is also part of this equation; you may want something with either great remote management capabilities or something simple anyone can maintain. If you purchase rarer equipment it may be harder to find remote service personnel capable of support. However if you design the systems well .... with spares and redundant paths .... a centralized body may handle this for you. You see it all depends on your approach to the problem.

Next how high will you scale, do you have growth projections for the future. Are there any new applications or new company acquisitions which will seriously affect the solution. Will you be moving say from a DS3 bandwidth backbone to an OC3 bandwidth backbone in a few years?

Once all the considerations have been looked at you must be consistent. Classify differing sites and have set standards in operating systems, hardware platforms, IP Addressing and configurations for sites. This is great from a TCO perspective and will make supporting the network easier and cheaper. Even when using low end equipment replacing a standard item held it stock is much easier the trying to figure out a new configuration in the heat of a network outage. This also makes documentation easier which is the core of world class architecture. Support on sites without documentation is always a nightmare.

For network designers there are obviously many brand considerations, but most will often recommend CISCO solutions. I can recommend CISCO from a security, manageability, scalability and supportability perspective. However it can be quite expensive depending on your requirements.

It is up to you to manage the balance between price and the rest. You may end up with a different vendor for routing, switching, wireless, VOIP etc. The important thing is to try and keep it manageable. The item price is not the full cost consider Maintenance, Support and Reliability in your equation. Sometimes the most expensive option has a much better support cost than the upfront cheap options.

Whatever solution you choose in the end .... hopefully you follow a well thought plan in the process incorporating the above issues and suggestions.

Are You an Alpha, Pre-Alpha Or Beta Personality? - Your MLM-Network Marketing Business Depends on It

Now this is some good stuff. One of the best things that you can do if you are in or about to participate in a Multi Level or lead driven business, is to analyze why some people seem to sponsor people effortlessly, while the majority struggle.

I remember sitting in meetings watching successful marketers; I always knew there was something different about them; it was something I could feel, but never put my finger on.

Well, I finally came across an alternative type Network Marketing leader, his name is Mike Dillard. I have to tell you, the sponsoring/lead building portion of this business has been completely transformed with this new approach.

Are You an Alpha, Pre-Alpha Or Beta Personality? - Your MLM-Network Marketing Business Depends on It

Not Understanding These Personality Traits Can Kill Your MLM Business:

How? First let's define an Alpha, Pre-Alpha, and a Beta personality:

Alpha: An alpha is that guy or girl that is automatically one of the leaders in every situation. People flock to them on a sub-conscious level. They exude value and confidence at all times.

Pre-Alpha: A pre-alpha is someone aware of all the tools and knowledge to become an alpha. They are aware that they are on the way to a dominate leadership role; they may be starting to conduct their own meetings and asking for help only when absolutely necessary.

Beta: The beta typically have very little confidence or business value to offer (at least on the surface). This group is unsure in most situations. They typically live reactionary lives, where others dictate how it is so to speak. Complaining is always in season for these folks.

The good news is that wherever you are you can change. I consider myself an alpha on my way to super-alpha! Even before I learned of this new way of conducting a successful MLM/Network marketing business, I had pretty good success with leadership and sponsoring.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can't do it. There is no one more deserving of a thriving business than you. I mean that. You see; even though some people have alpha or automatic leadership karma, they enjoy the fact that others don't have it!

Well, I am here to tell that even if you don't have it, you can get it, you deserve it, and you should not let any one deprive you of the benefits of leading. Think of all the people you can help. OK off the soap box I go. Get further information and I will see down the road.

What is the Difference Between Local Area Network and Wide Area Network?

If you have a connection to the Internet at home or in the office, or read the newspapers regularly or keep track of the latest technology trends, you may have frequently come across references to networks. Networks of computers were associated with industries and government bodies just a couple of decades ago. In current times, having a network at home is very common. Both Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) are used to provide networking for computer users.

A typical use of a LAN is to provide Internet connectivity simultaneously to all the users in a home with a single Internet connection. All the Internet-capable devices available in the home can be configured as nodes in a LAN and can be connected to the Internet via a computer designated for this purpose. LANs can also be used to connect workstations in an office environment in a similar fashion for providing access to shared resources like printers.

A LAN uses 10baseT twisted pair cables or wireless networking to connect computers to form a network. There are some vendor specific connectivity solutions available for proprietary LAN topologies.

What is the Difference Between Local Area Network and Wide Area Network?

WANs are also made up of networks of computers - the difference between a LAN and a WAN is merely one of degree. A WAN may be composed of thousands of LANs all networked together. A LAN may typically span a building whereas a WAN can cover a wide geographical area, transcending state or national borders. In a LAN, the distance covered is typically of the order of feet in contrast to a WAN where distances are of the order of thousands of miles.

A WAN is implemented by using leased lines provided by a service provider or by using packet switching networks to transmit the data within the network. One of the most well known examples of a WAN is the Internet.
